Tuna Recipe

Tuna Lettuce Cups and Bowl By Haley

You gotta love a good tuna recipe, and this one is easy and quick to make.  Tuna salad has become my absolute favorite thing to have for lunch. It is healthy, so easy to make (even in college), and taste amazing! Looking back at the tuna salad you grew up on, it probably wasn’t the healthiest tuna recipe and lacked flavor. Well, I am going to rock your world with this tuna salad recipe that tastes amazing and perfect for avoiding the Freshman 15.

Start with good quality tuna

The first ingredient in the tuna salad is canned tuna. Now I purchase tuna with no salt or oils added because I want it as healthy as I can get it. Also always make sure you are getting a good source of fish. I only buy WILD tuna, and I’ll tell you why. WILD caught tuna means it is not raised and fed on a farm. Essentially it was caught in the wild, not raised and fed unhealthy food (which then you consume).

Avoiding the Freshmen 15

Ahhh, as legend has it, there is no avoiding the Freshmen 15 or is there! Before entering the college environment, I was so anxious. I was stressing out about what I was going to eat, the freshman 15 and how I was going to maintain a healthy lifestyle on dorm food. I will admit, it’s been a struggle being on a budget and working with dorm food. However, I want today’s post to focus on the positives and the simple things that can help you stay on track.

Avoiding unhealthy food

The first thing is not eating all the unhealthy food because it’s available. Many times this can be hard (all the time…in my case) when pizza and fries surround you. I am not saying don’t have those things, but it needs to be in moderation. I suggest having a fun treat or meal on a specific day or weekends only.

For me, that might mean eating a burrito, cookie(s), etc. on a Saturday night. If you find yourself eating pizza and fries every other night, well it’s going to add up and avoiding the freshman 15 is not going to happen. My most helpful tip when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle or doing anything in life is doing it CONSISTENTLY. That could mean, limiting fries and pizza to once a week and making healthy meal choices all other times. You need to find a balance and what works best for you.

Workout Recovery

workout recovery arm stretch by Haley

I find workout recovery to be just as important as one’s actual workout. It’s essential we give our bodies recovery time.  By following specific steps before and after workout(s), I’ve learned aids in my muscles recovery, plus it just makes me feel better!

Recovering from a workout can look different for everyone and mean different things. For me, workout recovery means taking care of my body and paying attention to how I feel after a workout. Sometimes my back hurts after a prior workout, instead of pushing myself to exercise again and hurting myself further, I will take a “recovery day.” Then there are times when recovery days are simply scheduled into my workout plan for the week. However, let’s back up…you may be wondering, “what/how does recovering after a workout” even look like?

Keeping Your Makeup Brushes Clean Is Essential

Cleaning Makeup Brushes by Haning with Haley

How often should you clean your makeup brushes?

“Ooh, I am supposed to clean those?”

“Uuuhhhhh I just rinse them with water.”

“What do I even clean them with!”

“How do I clean them!?”

These are all questions that I have either asked or heard. I bet if I ask my friends how often they clean their makeup brushes they would tell me they have never washed them before. Think about it, when was the last time you cleaned your brushes, and how long have you had your brushes for? You should be washing your makeup brushes at least once a month.

WHATTTTT!? Your makeup and facial oils build up on the brush over time, and bacteria starts to build, which means you need to be washing your those brushes…OFTEN! When it comes to my foundation brush, I religiously clean it every two weeks because the foundation builds up and can cause a breakout!

Workout Motivation

workout motivation - hanging with haley

Workout Motivation…something that at some point everyone struggles with. Motivation most certainly comes in waves. Sometimes I feel way more motivated than other days, or I get an extreme kick right before an upcoming event. However, that extra dose of motivation doesn’t last.

So how do you stay motivated to work out all the time?

I have realized that if I do not love my workouts, then I don’t want to do them. I have to mix up my workouts and find something that I enjoy doing. For example, I don’t like spin; it’s not my thing! So, forcing myself to go to a spin class will only make me NOT want to workout. I love HITT workouts where I get extremely sweaty, and I feel like a total ninja in the gym. Other times, I love doing low-intensity pilate style workouts. Also to mix things up, I will ditch my gym session completely and go on a hike or on my recovery days, I will go for a super long walk.

Working out doesn’t have to mean that you are doing sit-ups and running on the treadmill! To find my workout motivation, I workout in a way that makes me happy. I am not saying I am always thrilled to go to the gym… in fact some days I dread it. Those are the days where I need to find a little extra sprinkle of motivation out of my morning cup of coffee.

Are You Practicing Self-Care?

Hanging with Haley

Happy International Self-Care Day everyone!

In the past couple of months, I have made a huge effort to practice more self-care and create a routine that I love! I have been listening to tons of podcasts and watching videos on other’s self-care rituals, and I can now say I am obsessed with the topic. I feel such a difference when I take time for myself to do something that makes me feel good. This can be anything from taking a bath, doing a face mask, or watching reality tv while drinking tea (aka letting my brain just completely relax and go to mush haha). I think it is so important to take time for yourself and do things that make you feel good and re-energized.

Self-care night

I love to have a ‘self-care night’ at least once a week. My self-care routine looks different every single time, but it usually entails that I take a long bath, apply a face mask, watch Netflix, and journal! (The time of the week where I can #extra and not feel bad about it) All of my favorite things in one night that leave me feeling amazing after and honestly unwind and de-stress. However, you don’t need a routine to practice self-care! It can be as simple as reading for a few minutes or working out! Some days it can be as simple as putting my phone down for an hour and reading or taking a walk. I find putting my phone away to be the best feeling. In a world full of social media and constant comparison a mini digital detox can be very necessary. I even consider my night time skincare routine apart of my self-care! In the end, it means taking time and focusing on yourself.

How To Eat Healthy: While Traveling

Eating Healthy While Traveling

When I am traveling, I find it so difficult to stay on track with my healthy eating and to take care of my body. It is easy to fall out off the wagon completely and eat junk food while you are traveling. While this is okay in moderation, it is essential to fuel your body with nutritious foods. I often find myself having to detox or get back on track when I get home if I don’t prepare for traveling. What I have found is a healthy balance with treating yourself and staying on track while traveling. I wanted to share my tips and tricks while traveling because not to toot my own horn but I have some pretty good ones!

My biggest tip when it comes to eating healthy while heading out of town is to prepare foods before traveling!

I hate to go in blind with no healthy snacks or meals available as it makes me so anxious! When I am flying, I will try to eat a filling meal before heading to the airport and then I will bring a healthy snack along with me. Some of my favorite healthy items to bring are an apple with an almond butter packet, berries, a salad, raw almonds, or chopped veggies with hummus. I focus on foods that I know will satisfy my cravings when I am surrounded by the tempting junk food which is everywhere in airports and while on the planes. So, I like to keep it simple and let me tell you it feels so good when you whip out your apples, and almond butter and everyone around you is super jealous! I always give myself a little pat on the back for being so prepared LOL.

Beauty tips everyone needs to know for traveling

Must Have Travel Beauty Products

Traveling whether it be a short flight or a long flight can be fun but also kind of a pain. When it comes to flying, I have learned some of the beauty do’s and don’ts. So I have a strict guideline which I follow to ensure that my beauty regimen stays on track while in the air. When it comes to my skin, I have become adamant about keeping it very consistent and always being attentive to what it needs. I almost think about my skin having a little bell that it rings when it needs something, and I am the servant that comes running with serums, oils, and pimple cream LOL. In simple terms, however, I follow what I call the No makeup-Extra Hydration-Stay clean protocol.

Health Grocery List

Healthy Grocery List

To me, opening your fridge and seeing it stocked with healthy food is one of the best feelings. For it to be fully stocked, you have to do the obvious…grocery shop. When I go grocery shopping, I start by getting my fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables. After I grab my packages foods, which I try to keep to a minimum. Lastly, I add my cold products to the cart. I have a set grocery list of food I always purchase and the rest such as my meat(s) or certain fruits/veggies for the week changes.

When I first began eating healthier, I found the grocery store daunting and didn’t know what to purchase. So to help, here is my master grocery list for some insights! It is a combination of foods I buy regularly and others once in a while. Overall it is a list that can help guide you in finding healthier items in the grocery store.
