Starbucks Fix And Staying Healthy

Drinking Starbucks

What isn’t there to love about Starbucks. Starbucks/coffee shops play a huge role in many peoples everyday life. Did you know that most of Starbucks drinks are filled with added sugar? Guess what, you can make healthier choices at Starbucks and avoid drinking your calories.

Drinks

  • Don’t get any sugary filled drinks! (Frappuccino’s, lemonades, most caffeinated drinks have added pumps of sweetener).
  • Get your drink unsweetened (if you need a little sweetener I would add honey).
  • Avoid using the creamers, milk, almond milk, coconut milk because they all have added sugar in them (yes, even the almond and coconut milk)
  • Look at Starbucks app and see what is actually in the drinks (the app shows how many pumps of cane sugar is in the drinks and other sweeteners).  I slowly weaned myself from the added sugar by asking for fewer pumps until I was able to finally able to order with no pumps added.
  • If you can, bring your creamer! I bring about 1/3 cup of my own unsweetened vanilla almond milk (If I know I am going to Starbucks).  Helpful hint: I use a reusable Starbucks cup, add my creamer from home and they add my coffee to the cup.

Collagen Powder: Worth The Hype?

Collagen powder

The benefits

About a year ago and a half ago I began to use collagen powder. I started off by just putting it in my tea and drinking it a couple of times a week. After I started using it, I began to notice mayor benefits! Collagen is terrific for your skin, hair, nails, joints, and bones. It keeps the elasticity in your skin, which you lose when you age (my mom also uses it and has seen significant differences in her skin regarding overall tightness). After about one month of using collagen powder, I noticed my nails were getting stronger.   Then within about three months, I noticed my hair was growing super fast (I’ve always had long nails, but they would break easily, and my hair would never grow). Along with beauty benefits, collagen is incredible for your muscles, joints, and bones, and is an excellent source of protein.

Favorite Green Smoothie

Green Smoothie - healthy

How I found my way to a great green smoothie recipe.  A couple months ago I stumbled upon a podcast that had on the celebrity nutritionist Kelly Leveque.  Shortly after that, I picked up her book and fell in love with the science behind the method of her fab four smoothies. In the fab four smoothies, you have your fiber, fat, greens, and protein. She talks about how having all these components not only help you curve your hunger hormones so you will stay fuller longer. The past couples months I have been following that guide when making my smoothies.

I love starting my morning with a smoothie, and I love having them after I work out! I feel like I can get in so many nutrients that my body needs in such a simple way. Lately, I’ve also been trying to cut back on the amount of fruit that I have in my smoothies to decrease the amount of carb and sugar I have in the morning. Cutting back prevents me from spiking my blood sugar levels. I usually have a cup of fruit in my smoothies, but now I limit it down to ½ cup of fruit or less.

What is Kombucha and Why I Drink It?

what is kombucha

What is Kombucha and why I love to drink it!  After hearing about this fantastic drink and posting about it, people started asking me what the heck is ‘Kombucha’? I’m sure by now you have heard of this trendy drink, but I’m here to break it down for you.

So what is Kombucha:

Kombucha is a fermented probiotic. I know what you’re thinking, “what in the world does that mean”… and “what is a probiotic?”.  Your body is made up of different bacteria, good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are the good bacteria that your gut needs to function and digest food. Essentially a healthy gut is everything. Your gut needs probiotics (good bacteria) to stay healthy.  If you don’t have good bacteria it can lead to bloating, trouble digesting food, brain fog, and fatigue. Also, you might be a little blocked up… AHH, I KNOW TMI!
