No social media for five days… I know in today’s society it sounds like the worst thing. After doing a social media detox, I realized how important it was to give myself a break from the online world.
I have to admit my detox was sort of forced. While I was going through rush, I had to delete my social media. At first, I had a mini heart attack, mainly because I use my Instagram as an extension to my blog. After I took a step back, I realized how I had never been off social media for that long, and I could benefit from it.
Honestly, I didn’t mind not having access to my social media because I didn’t have a lot of downtime during this social detox. I was so busy over
Don’t get me wrong I love being able to share things on social media and get a glimpse into others life’s, but it is very draining. I think in today’s society girls are all trying to do the exact same thing and we are constantly comparing ourselves. With not having Instagram I didn’t compare myself nor did I get in my own head. I realize now it was the most confident I had felt in a while. On social media, you are seeing only an aspect of someone and the best version of themselves (which we tend to forget).
What were the benefits of the detox?
Not having social media was extremely beneficial to my mental health. I found myself disconnecting to the online world of constant judging, comparing, and spending way too much time on my phone. Instead, I found myself way more productive and present. Having my friends also not having social media helped because we were doing it together.
During this time period, I felt myself having an entirely clearer mind and less distracted with what others were doing. Overall I felt more positive! This social media detox experience was an amazing way to practice self-care, and I ended up needing this detox more than I thought I did.
The major benefit was the amount of sh*t I got done because I didn’t have my phone to distract me. My social media detox started the day before I left to return to school from winter break. I started packing without taking any “5 min breaks” (that always turn into an hour of scrolling through Instagram) and was shocked at how fast I got things packed up.
Once I was back at school, I unpacked, reorganized my drawers, and spent quality time with friends. It was so lovely to detach from the online world.

My tips for staying off social media!
Overall I would recommend doing the detox with friends because it makes it a lot easier! I strongly suggest deleting all your social media apps, so you aren’t tempted! Get a pen and paper out and make a list of things you want to accomplish during the social detox that you haven’t had “time for.” Things like; organize your room, workout, call your grandma, journal, cook, you name it!
While doing this social media detox don’t think of it as a negative experience, or it will be. Be present with people in your life and embrace the detox. I promise you will feel amazing after. Just remember you’ll have
I will absolutely do this again in the future even if it’s just for a day! I hope you enjoyed this post and you too will try a social media detox from time to time.
Until next time, thanks for Hanging With Haley.
