Beauty tips everyone needs to know for traveling

Must Have Travel Beauty Products

Traveling whether it be a short flight or a long flight can be fun but also kind of a pain. When it comes to flying, I have learned some of the beauty do’s and don’ts. So I have a strict guideline which I follow to ensure that my beauty regimen stays on track while in the air. When it comes to my skin, I have become adamant about keeping it very consistent and always being attentive to what it needs. I almost think about my skin having a little bell that it rings when it needs something, and I am the servant that comes running with serums, oils, and pimple cream LOL. In simple terms, however, I follow what I call the No makeup-Extra Hydration-Stay clean protocol.

Staying clean I mean with your diet, and hygiene.

It is easy to get caught up while flying (and in airports) to eat far too much fast food, packaged foods and sweets…and believe me, it will take a major toll on your skin. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and treat yourself! Just take notice of what you’re eating, drinking, and ensure you are getting your nutrients. An easy way is to think greens; it can be as simple as a packaged salad you can take on the plane (because let’s face it, airlines don’t service quality First Class food in the back of the plane which is where I’m always seating).

As for sweets we all love to eat while flying….you may want to treat yourself, but just limit the amount. My skin will let me know right away when I am consuming too much sugar because it breaks out in what I called ‘sugar pimples.’ Case in point, on Easter and a few days following it, I consumed way more sugar than I usually do and my body felt awful, but my skin completely broke out. To avoid sugar pimples while flying/traveling have those sweets in moderation, and compensate with tons of lemon water to help detox your body.

Ditch the makeup

Wear little to no makeup! If I wear makeup, it’s because it’s a short flight. However, it’s usually a minimal amount. On long overnight trips, I don’t often wear makeup at all. The reason being, when you are in the air, your skin dries out, and honestly, you don’t want to sleep with makeup on. I think of it as a great time to let my skin breathe. Some might even think about putting on a nice hydrating mask. Might as well do a little something fun while your seating on a long flight squished in your small plane seat.  At the end of your overnight plane ride, your skin will be glowing while everyone else skin looks dull and wiped.

Oh, a great tip is to always bring a little makeup bag in your carry on so you can fresh up once off the plane but more importantly, just in case your luggage gets lost. A girl can always buy more clothes, but your makeup that tends to be harder to replace.

Pack on your serums and moisturizer

Before traveling always use a serum or heavy moisturizer that will keep your skin hydrated for hours. Your skin gets super dry from being in the air. I advise on bringing a hydrating sheet mask that you can put on while everyone is sleeping (this way you don’t get weird stares if you are uncomfortable). Sheet masks are easy because you don’t have to rinse off the mask after, same with under eye patches. My favorite sheet mask is the Dr. Jart+ Water Replenishment Mask. If you don’t want to use a sheet mask, I suggest applying a hydrating cream/lotion (don’t forget to lotion your hands and your body as these areas get super dry too!). Lastly, I also advocate bringing a lip treatment that is going to keep your lips from cracking from the dry plane air; I use the Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment (check out more info on this lip treatment)

Don’t touch your face

I never, ever touch my face unless my hands are clean (unless I have a nose itch LOL). Touching your face while traveling is asking for a break out due to the fact airplanes have tons of germs and bacteria! Avoid touching your cheeks to the seat or window when you fall asleep (a neck pillow can help – which I seem to always forget at home). Oh and remember, make a special trip to the restroom just to SCRUB your hands clean… especially if you are going to be applying a mask or cream!

You have probably guessed but I am that germ freak that wipes down everything on the plane with antibacterial wipes as soon as I sit down. After wiping everything down, I follow up with hand sanitizer to ensure my hands are clean if I accidentally touch my face!

Chug Water!

Not drink…chug that water! Drinking water has become a staple tip in almost all my blog posts, but that’s because it makes the biggest difference! So when the cart comes rolling down the airplane aisle, remember water, water water! Hydrating your skin starts from within, so drink up!

Bring a face mist

If you want to hydrate your face quickly while traveling, you can always bring a face mist. A gentle spritz of face mist will help hydrate your skin quickly and leave it and you feeling refreshed. My favorite is Mario Badescu Facial Spray with aloe, herbs and the best part, rosewater! It helps fight inflammation, redness, and acne. I tend to drown myself in this stuff, especially while in the air!

Dry Shampoo

Don’t forget that your hair also gets dry which causes your scalp to produce more oils aka “hello greasy hair” UGH. Landing and having greasy, gross feeling hair is the worst. So pack a mini dry shampoo in your carry on, and you are set! My favorite dry shampoo is the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo (mini).

So when traveling, I find keeping my beauty routine consistent and adding few extras when flying can save me from having to “fix” my skin when I get to my destination or when I return home. Pampering yourself while traveling also feels quite like a mini spa on the go, and makes it more fun!  Helpful Hint, when it comes to traveling I also like have my products in mini travel sizes. I tend to find many of my travel sizes at Sephora in the checkout lane. They seem to have has a ton of travel goods, and the travel section at target is also amazing.
