Detox: Post Vacation

detox post vacation

After a long vacation where you are eating, and for many people drinking, you are in need of a major detox. After a long trip where I am eating unhealthy and not getting enough sleep, I find my body needing a pick me up when I get home. I focus on hydrating my body, fueling it with nutrients, and debloating. Even after a long weekend, I will follow this regimen to help me bounce back.

WATER…more WATER…and even more WATER!

After traveling your body is very dehydrated! I would recommend drinking lemon water to help flush out all the toxins. Drinking water is going to be annoying the first day because you will always be needing to pee but that’s how you know your body is flushing out everything (TMI but your pee should end up clear!). Sip on hot lemon water first thing in the morning, and I suggest adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV) to aid in digestion. Drinking water seems to simple, yet it does wonders for your body. Bring a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day, so you always have water with you! I recommend setting a goal for how much water you want to drink before a specific time. (ex: I want to drink three bottles of water before noon)

No sugar or added salt

Avoiding sugar and salt for the week is going to be a significant game changer while you detox. Of course, natural sugars from fruit are okay, in fact, we want to eat fruit! Avoid refined sugars and added salt to your food. Taking out sugar for a week is going to be hard if your body is used to having it every day. When you crave that cupcake have an apple with almond butter instead! Look at labels this week because added sugars are in many of the foods you consume (especially condiments and dressings). In the long run, sugar/salt will only cause you to bloat. Steer clear of packaged and processed foods, and this won’t be as challenging!

Eat clean food

I’m sorry no “In-N-Out” this week! Eating clean food is the best way to detox. An easy way to eat clean is to focus on foods that are fresh. If you are going to eat meat, then make sure it is lean and not cooked with tons of added salt. One of my favorite ways to detox is green juices/smoothies. I suggest sticking with veggies, fruits, roots, and fish this week.

Example of what a detox day might look like:

Hot lemon water with ACV as soon as you get up

Breakfast: green smoothie (Green Smoothie Recipe) or juice

Lunch: lettuce wrapped shrimp

Snack: bone broth

Dinner: veggies and chicken

Wellness shots

These babies are going to be a lifesaver for you while you detox. Run to your local juice bar and stock up on a few shots for the week. I recommend ginger shots, digestion shots (usually have a probiotic or apple cigar vinegar in them), and turmeric shots (see more on turmeric). Take the first thing in the morning or before your next meal!

Work out

Ugh, I know back to the grind (Wink Wink)! Moving your body and sweating is one of the best ways to help detox. Moving your body is going to aid in digestion and help you get rid of toxins.  If anything, go for a long walk each day.

Cut down your coffee intake

Coffee is a acidic which is going to dehydrate your body. I recommend switching your coffee intake to half of what you usually have. You can also try having green tea to help with the lack of caffeine (headaches from cutting back on coffee can be brutal).

Tips and tricks:

  •          Have 1-2 glasses of water as soon as you wake up.
  •          Double check labels on prepackaged green juices as they can have added sugar.
  •          Try incorporating Cucumber into your meals/smoothies. It is 80% water and will help hydrate your body.
