Keeping Your Makeup Brushes Clean Is Essential

How often should you clean your makeup brushes?

“Ooh, I am supposed to clean those?”

“Uuuhhhhh I just rinse them with water.”

“What do I even clean them with!”

“How do I clean them!?”

These are all questions that I have either asked or heard. I bet if I ask my friends how often they clean their makeup brushes they would tell me they have never washed them before. Think about it, when was the last time you cleaned your brushes, and how long have you had your brushes for? You should be washing your makeup brushes at least once a month.

WHATTTTT!? Your makeup and facial oils build up on the brush over time, and bacteria starts to build, which means you need to be washing your those brushes…OFTEN! When it comes to my foundation brush, I religiously clean it every two weeks because the foundation builds up and can cause a breakout!

How do you clean your brushes?

There are tons of makeup brush solutions. However, I have learned that using plain dove dishwasher soap is the best way to clean them. Start by wetting the brush and running the water over the brush, down to the root. Next, put a dime size amount of soup in the palm of your hand. Twirl the brush around in your hand in circular motions. After you rinse the brush thoroughly, grab the bristles from the root and squeeze out all the excess water. If you see soap come out, then you need to rinse it more. Once they are washed is is time to lay it down on a towel to air dry. Repeat this step for the rest of your brushes.

*Note: Different brushes may need more or less soap due to their size or how dirty they are.

I also use a cleansing oil on my eyeshadow brushes for a quick clean. I use this often when I need to remove a dark color. Cleaning my brushes takes about 10-minute maximum, and it makes the most significant difference when you apply your makeup with clean brushes!

What tools to use

To clean my brushes, I use the Sigma brush cleaning glove. It has two sides, one side for larger brushes and the other for smaller brushes. I do the same steps however I put my soap of the mitt and use the grooves to aid in cleaning them better. I highly recommend getting Sigma’s mitt or cleaning mat to help clean your brushes, along with being efficient it makes the cleaning process so much easier! If you use a beauty blender to apply your foundation, you still need to be cleaning it often and replacing it. Beauty Blender makes a cleanser that you can purchase to clean it, and it is supper efficient! You can also use something as simple as a bar of soap.
