Motivation…something that at some point everyone struggles with. Motivation most certainly comes in waves. Sometimes I feel way more motivated than other days, or I get an extreme kick right before an upcoming event. However, that extra dose of motivation doesn’t last. So how do you stay motivated to work out all the time? I have realized that if I do not love my workouts, then I don’t want to do them. I have to mix up my workouts and find something that I enjoy doing. For example, I don’t like spin; it’s not my thing, so forcing myself to go to a spin class will only make me NOT want to workout. I love HITT workouts where I get extremely sweaty, and I feel like a total ninja in the gym. Other times, I love doing low-intensity pilate style workouts. Also to mix things up, I will ditch my gym session completely and go on a hike or on my recovery days, I will go for a super long walk. Working out doesn’t have to mean that you are doing sit-ups and running on the treadmill! To find my motivation, I workout in a way that makes me happy. I am not saying I am always thrilled to go to the gym… in fact some days I dread it. Those are the days where I need to find a little extra sprinkle of motivation out of my morning cup of coffee.
Looking back at when I first began my health journey I was making so many mistakes, and I didn’t even know it. We all have to start somewhere, and over time I learned more about health and nutrition through books, podcasts, videos, and documentaries. Looking back, however, I wish someone would have told me some of the healthy mistakes I was making….so I got you covered!
Happy International Self-Care Day everyone!
In the past couple of months, I have made a huge effort to practice more self-care and create a routine that I love! I have been listening to tons of podcasts and watching videos on other’s self-care rituals, and I can now say I am obsessed with the topic. I feel such a difference when I take time for myself to do something that makes me feel good. This can be anything from taking a bath, doing a face mask, or watching reality tv while drinking tea (aka letting my brain just completely relax and go to mush haha). I think it is so important to take time for yourself and do things that make you feel good and re-energized.
I love to have a ‘self-care night’ at least once a week. My self-care routine looks different every single time, but it usually entails that I take a long bath, apply a face mask, watch Netflix, and journal! (The time of the week where I can #extra and not feel bad about it) All of my favorite things in one night that leave me feeling amazing after and honestly unwind and de-stress. However, you don’t need a routine to practice self-care! It can be as simple as reading for a few minutes or working out! Some days it can be as simple as putting my phone down for an hour and reading or taking a walk. I find putting my phone away to be the best feeling. In a world full of social media and constant comparison a mini digital detox can be very necessary. I even consider my night time skincare routine apart of my self-care! In the end, it means taking time and focusing on yourself.
When I am traveling, I find it so difficult to stay on track with my healthy eating and to take care of my body. It is easy to fall out off the wagon completely and eat junk food while you are traveling. While this is okay in moderation, it is essential to fuel your body with nutritious foods. I often find myself having to detox or get back on track when I get home if I don’t prepare for when I am traveling. I have found that a healthy balance with treating yourself and staying on track while traveling. I wanted to share my tips and tricks while traveling because not to toot my own horn but I have some pretty good ones!
My biggest tip when it comes to eating healthy while heading out of town is to prepare foods before traveling! I hate to go in blind with no healthy snacks or meals available as it makes me so anxious! When I am flying, I will try to eat a filling meal before heading to the airport and then I will bring a healthy snack along with me. Some of my favorite healthy items to bring are an apple with an almond butter packet, berries, a salad, raw almonds, or chopped veggies with hummus. I focus on foods that I know will satisfy my cravings when I am surrounded by the tempting junk food which is everywhere in airports and while on the planes. I like to keep it simple and let me tell you it feels so good when you whip out your apples, and almond butter and everyone around you is super jealous! I always give myself a little pat on the back for being so prepared LOL.
Traveling whether it be a short flight or a long flight can be fun but also kind of a pain. When it comes to flying, I have learned some of the beauty do’s and don’ts. So I have a strict guideline which I follow to ensure that my beauty regimen stays on track while in the air. When it comes to my skin, I have become adamant about keeping it very consistent and always being attentive to what it needs. I almost think about my skin having a little bell that it rings when it needs something, and I am the servant that comes running with serums, oils, and pimple cream LOL. In simple terms, however, I follow what I call the No makeup-Extra Hydration-Stay clean protocol.
To me, opening your fridge and seeing it stocked with healthy food is one of the best feelings. For it to be fully stocked, you have to do the obvious…grocery shop. When I go grocery shopping, I start by getting my fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables. After I grab my packages foods, which I try to keep to a minimum. Lastly, I add my cold products to the cart. I have a set grocery list of food I always purchase and the rest such as my meat(s) or certain fruits/veggies for the week changes. When I first began eating healthier, I found the grocery store daunting and didn’t know what to purchase. So to help, here is my master grocery list for some insights! It is a combination of foods I buy regularly and others once in a while. Overall it is a list that can help guide you in finding healthier items in the grocery store.
What isn’t there to love about Starbucks. Starbucks/coffee shops play a huge role in many peoples everyday life. Did you know that most of Starbucks drinks are filled with added sugar? Guess what, you can make healthier choices at Starbucks and avoid drinking your calories.
- Don’t get any sugary filled drinks! (Frappuccino’s, lemonades, most caffeinated drinks have added pumps of sweetener).
- Get your drink unsweetened (if you need a little sweetener I would add honey).
- Avoid using the creamers, milk, almond milk, coconut milk because they all have added sugar in them (yes, even the almond and coconut milk)
- Look at Starbucks app and see what is actually in the drinks (the app shows how many pumps of cane sugar is in the drinks and other sweeteners). I slowly weaned myself from the added sugar by asking for fewer pumps until I was able to finally able to order with no pumps added.
- If you can, bring your creamer! I bring about 1/3 cup of my own unsweetened vanilla almond milk (If I know I am going to Starbucks). Helpful hint: I use a reusable Starbucks cup, add my creamer from home and they add my coffee to the cup.
RePicture yourself watching the bachelorette on Monday night with your chocolate and tea (or maybe wine), and your missing something… a face mask! I love doing face masks, not only because they are fun, but they truly help my skin! Over the past recent months, I’ve discovered two masks that have completely transformed my skin. The first mask is the Drunk Elephant Sukari Babyfacial mask. I heard many beauty influencers rave about this product which is now a top selling product at Sephora! The second mask I have been loving is the Éminence Clear Skin Probiotic Masque. It has aided in clearing up any blemishes I have and cleaning out my pores.

Before I purchase any face product, I always read the reviews on Sephora (I do this with any skincare products I’m considering and most of my makeup products). As I read through the reviews, I saw an outstanding number of people saying how much this product had changed their skin for the better, and everyone was raving about it. I was very hesitant to buy it due to the price, but I ended up purchasing it with my mom, and we now share the product. I recommend splitting the cost and sharing it with a family member (sister, mom, dad whoever it may be).
After a long vacation where you are eating, and for many people drinking, you are in need of a major detox. After a long trip where I am eating unhealthy and not getting enough sleep, I find my body needing a pick me up when I get home. I focus on hydrating my body, fueling it with nutrients, and debloating. Even after a long weekend, I will follow this regimen to help me bounce back.
About a year ago and a half ago I began to use collagen powder. I started off by just putting it in my tea and drinking it a couple of times a week. After I started using it, I began to notice mayor benefits! Collagen is terrific for your skin, hair, nails, joints, and bones. It keeps the elasticity in your skin, which you lose when you age (my mom also uses it and has seen significant differences in her skin regarding overall tightness). After about one month of using collagen powder, I noticed my nails were getting stronger. Then within about three months, I noticed my hair was growing super fast (I’ve always had long nails, but they would break easily, and my hair would never grow). Along with beauty benefits, collagen is incredible for your muscles, joints, and bones, and is an excellent source of protein.
